Of stones, wood, a few leaves and a little rust

Images I will always carry in my mind about NZ are: that it is a place of stone and timber; and these are tumbled, and formed into new shapes by a fairly harsh environment – wind, snow and rain; and metal rusts and timber erodes.

In this post I just wanted to share a small number of stone, rust, wood, water and leaf images I experienced.

The small stone cairn below was made by Fiona and I just after I had slipped on wet rocks attempting to take a great photo of some rusted metal submerged in the sea water, partially covered by sand and stones. The attempt seemed worth the risk at the time; but after a good soaking and a cold breeze I was not so sure. The iPhone took a quick dunk but at least in the short term has recovered. I ended up with a few bruises – but as they say in the classics we must suffer for our art!!!!

I don’t think I will ever stop appreciating the beauty that nature creates as it tumbles and hones both natural and manmade artefacts.

  1. It's always a shock to take a tumble especially on wet rocks. Hope you had a good rest and a glass of wine or two to restore your sense of calm at the end of the day.

My kind of photos! It would be very difficult for me to restrain myself from bringing all those beautiful rocks home.

  6. Fabulous photos, Barry! I am especially taken with that cairn though....I love the idea of marking our passage or place with a little pile of rocks! I am quite sorry to hear of your tumble, however!!! Hope you and your friend the i-phone are restored 100%! Cheers!

  7. R, V, P, VA, C, P (MB) & TL - thanks for your concern about body and phone. Happy to say both are well. Not sure how the phone will go longterm after a saltwater immersion. R - I must be predictable - yes the bruising was eased by a little NZ Pinot Noir. V - sometimes photos shared can open windows across the globe - glad mine were of interest. P (MB) - in the end F a 7 I created about 6-8 in places of significance for us - as you say a way of contributing to the surrounds and marking out passage without damaging anything. All go well and enjoy the run up to Christmas. B
