Wood, wood tools and more wood

Over the last couple of days I have been testing a wee wood plane (above); sealing the ends of salvaged fallen timber that will be used to make wood vases; and starting to cut niches into the large cypress pine posts that will become a sculpture of three posts.

The wee wood plane (about 8-9cm long) fits into the palm of one's hand and worked beautifully. It will be used in the process of making wood vases.

The fallen salvaged timber was cleaned up and the ends sealed with wood wax to reduce splitting as it dries out. Some offcuts of cypress pine were also sealed.

Creating the niches on the cypress pine posts will involve a lot of hand saw, hand chisel and rasp work as you can see in the photos following.

I think the niches will provide grand spots for rusty bits as you can see below - some nice negative spaces. The odd looking piece on top of the post will not feature in the final works - I need to track down some large rusty cogs.

Not a lot of completed work; but good progress. The post in the photo above is about 80-90cm high.
