Leaf spoons and ladle

I'm still playing with some forms and functional objects for the food festival.  In comments on an earlier post some folk suggested that the bent handles of the salt-pepper spoons looked a bit like leaves. I had intended to try a couple of prototype teaspoons with leaves.

The spoons below are the results of the experiment. The brass spoon is made from brass from a jardiniere; and the copper from a small recycled water tank.

Fiona suggested that a ladle might be useful. The ladle below was made from a recycled four fold fold formed copper bowl and the handle off an old plumbers soldering iron. After a bit of reworking; sanding; polishing; and riveting the ladle came together quite well. The ladle gives one an idea of the size of the teaspoons.

The playing has indicated that there are a number of food related objects that I could create for the food festival stall. It was suggested that the objects I make might need to be made from copper or pewter. The copper certainly worked well and the public generally accept it for use with food.

  1. I quite like the leaf-spoon combo... and I must say they are now also rather tadpole like as well! Glad you are back to health and needing to be kept off the streets, good news indeed!

  3. absolutely lovely...
the ladle, strong and beautiful - i really love the texture in the bowl of it...
the small spoons - the movement is evocative of tadpoles... which i think is rather nice... they definitely look like your leaves, but with the addition of the other element, they take on a life of their own...
    well done!

  8. Love how everyone sees tadpoles in the leaf-spoons... they are absolutely charming. But the ladle - wow! Wonderful. Would definitely be something that would be used often in my kitchen...

  9. VA, AA, MJ, JM, L, SZQ & L - thanks for positive comments - bit interesting that so any people saw a tadpole shape in the leaf spoons. AA - thanks for comment and glad you find the work inspiring. MJ - talk about recycling - the ladle bowl was a folfformed bowl - but as there is not a lot of demand I decided to use my punch bowl wood form to just punch it into a bowl form thus keeping all the folds and texture of the earlier bowl but flattened - and then I beat it to get a smooth form. JM - the challenge I was given was to create some contemporary utilitarian forms - so the leaf teaspoon was a must. LT, SZQ & LJ - the ladle has a beautiful rustic look - missed the contemporary challenge on that score. All - go well and create well. B
