OK to be sad?

I had worked all morning on work-work  - so I had planned time in the studio-garage this afternoon to continue making a series of Daily Words sets - both to fill an order and in preparation for our upcoming open studio weekend.

There were to be 3 sets of Daily Leaf-words; and 4 sets of my original Daily Words. So lots of cutting circles for bowls and pieces for words - leaves and rectangles.

Making the small 6cm long leaf forms is fiddly with the stamping folding and cutting.

And then hammering, annealing and unfolding the 21 leaf forms for three sets of inspirational leaf-words. But all did not go according to plan. Ten leaf-words were OK.

But eleven split on opening - brittle metal that could not handle the unfolding process - bit sad about that.

I cut another batch (13 pieces) of scraps for the replacement leaves. And I tested this metal to ensure it was OK.

And to cheer myself up I cut some gorgeous metal for Peace Pendants.

So you can see it is OK to be sad; but then we have to move on.

  1. some days the work is like that, on those step backward days, perhaps other work is going on?

  2. aww... it's ok B. You can cut the words out of the leaves again and then make then into little tags where you can rivet on other stuff you'll be making :) and i'm sure you'll think of other wonderful things to use them on ... afterall you are repurpose King!!

  3. So...what will happen to the metal that began to split? Will it eventually split the full length of the piece or stay as is? 'Cause I like the one with the split. Just wondering...

  4. On the other hand... the sad ones look a lot like leaves as they go through the decaying process!!

  5. You see sad but I see split leaves with unusual character. Surely you'll find a unique way to salvage them. Even your rejects are good.

  6. Well, no one seems too sad about your split leaves, B, and I'm sure, like your other commentators, something good will come of this. That's a lot of work you got done, I guess an occasional slip up is par for the course.

  7. Hi V, L, J, VA, AA & CC - thanks for your supportive comments. And I agree with the view that even the split leaves are beautiful in their own way. V - yes always other work being progressed. L - and you are right the split leaves will become other pieces. VA - yes just like decaying elves - now I just need to find someone who would like a set of Daily Word leaves that look a little decayed. AA - never any real rejects - just beginning for other pieces. C - I have started a couple of pairs of leaf earrings with words. All - go well and create well. B
