Is it a table or a bench?

The triple book stack bench seat I was commissioned to make was delivered and installed on Friday afternoon.

I wanted to cement it into place; but the owner wanted it to just be secured into the soil with soil and gravel. As I had included legs to be cemented into holes as part of the design we decided to use these to secure the bench seat.

And as you can see from the photos below the book stacks just look like they are part of the environment. Good gravel surrounds for drainage.

I spent quite a bit of time getting the stack level as well as secure. In the end we need to check the level in the mandatory way - a spirit level using three glasses of bubbles - which were also doubled as a celebration of the installation of the piece. So at this stage it became a table.

In the future the new owner will be able to sit on the bench with a glass beside her and just enjoy the view from under the shade of her trees.

This commission has turned out well - a very happy owner; and more Encyclopaedias saved from landfill.

  2. Well doesn't that look just marvellous. It may be a bench but it certainly worked well as a table for the champagne too. Love that last photo showing it well and truly in situ.

  6. Beautiful! A fitting surrounding for such a stunning piece. The book worm in me loves the use of encyclopedias and yearns to sit on or beside the table and enjoy reading a good book...while having a glass of wine or bubbly, of course. Or, then again, given the setting, just sitting and being sounds good too. Congratulations to you and the new owner!

  7. It looked as if it just grew in tha tplace - emerged fully formed, but at home. It is so beautiful and works equally well either way - I was so happy to test the spirit level!

  8. Hi L, SB, Ruma, AA, MJ J & F - thanks gang for checking out the book-stacks; and for your support through your comments - always appreciated. L - glad it excited you and thanks for sharing on FB. SB - just shows how versatile it is - but can't go wrong with the bubbles - and as you say it looks like it belongs. Ruma - thanks for you kinds words. AA - - I like stunner. MJ - got a bit embarrassed about the craftsmanship comment; and yes a artistic and practical way to recycled. J - I think every garden should have one; and such a solid base for bubbles. F - right place for it; and good to have you there for the installation and spirit level test. All - go well. B
