Not to everyone's taste

It amuses me that many of us tend to collect odd bits and pieces and say to ourselves that they will be good for something. As part of my approach to the new year I decided to look at small bits that I have been holding on to thinking they might be elements of something. In the end I decided to use them in making earrings with a difference.

As you will see from the photos I've used: cleaned vertebrae of a carpet python I found down the back of 601; small brass bits - I think from a chandelier; some primitive looking stylised tiny skulls made from bone - I don't know where they came from; and some silver beads - again not sure where they came from. Some crystals and bone beads added.

I think the pairs of earrings are unusual, unique; but not to everyone's taste. All the earrings have solid silver wires.

I have used up those pieces that have just been around. I think the contrasts between the bone, crystals and silver work reasonably well.

Creating a hoard...

A little while ago I indicated that I was commissioned to make a horde of pieces from a covered silver-plated EPNS serving tray. A couple of the pictures in the post showed that I had cut up the tray (top and bottom). I am now just about finished the work.

This post shows: two Daily Word sets; two spiral rings; two spiral bracelets; two pendants; two pairs of found earrings; two leaf forms; and offcut-scraps turned into fragment bowls.

By Sunday I will have finished the remaining part of the commission - to make a set (three) of small fungi form bowls. But now it is time to head to the kitchen and make the first pizza for 2016 and accompany it with a glass or two of red.

Off to the Expo...

Fiona and I often say that the art life is not all about creating. Even if an artist isn't interested in selling their art there can be many other facets to the art life: looking for inspiration; discussing art with others; sharing what one is doing; exhibiting; publishing etc etc.

If you are exhibiting and/or selling then you quickly realise that the art life involves quite a bit of organising and 'paper' work. Now and then Fiona refers to the fact that I have to do shop keeping tasks: price lists, packing, posting etc.

I have been doing many such shop keeping and admin tasks in preparation for the Sunshine Coast Jewellery and Art Expo ( 10-11 Oct) Coolum Civic Centre ( Park St Coolum Beach).

One of the final things I do for events such as the Expo is to make the product list. For me this includes name of piece/s, photo of piece/s, number of pieces and price. This becomes a checklist for keeping track of the bits and the sales.

I have photographed groups of pieces that will be for sale. Some of them are below.

The next task of course is setting up the stand; and of course attending to it for the two days of the event. At this point I tend to ask myself: Tell me again why I decided to do this?

And Fiona gets roped into to do price tags and attend the stand - goes she is asking the same question.

It is all part of our art life. It turns out that I have over 150 pieces for sale - made me tired when I realised that.

Hope to see a few familiar faces over the couple of days of the Expo.

Today is Friday - maybe a glass of wine will dim the pain!!!

Steampunk play on Friday

I have been doing a range of stuff today - including a hoard of riveted earrings; but I did get a bit sidetracked on some Steampunk bits. Partly because I needed to finish the blue pendant I almost finished a couple on months ago; and partly because I had the small Steampunk assemblage I was going to blog on on Wednesday.

Anyway below are a few photos of the small desktop Steampunk assemblage.

And this is how it started life.

The pendant has had a polish and has been given a stainless steel wire. The pendant is about 45-50mm in diameter. It will go into the shop soon.

When our friend Jeff was visiting after Christmas we visited the jewellery studio - the clean one; and he was taken buy the watch bodies and selected a few he thought matched and would make Steampunkisk earrings. Below are a couple of photos of the two sets I made today. I like to preserve the red jewels in the watch bodies and in the first one I have reflected these by adding a brass peg and ruby crystals. I thought the second pair need chains and cogs for a bit of length. Stainless steel watch bodies can be hard to drill through - I busted a couple of very fine bits drilling these sets.

Never a dull moment on the mountain. Now we are off to do an art consult with a friend and probably also drink bubbles etc.

Earrings with attitude

I grabbed a bit of time yersterday to finish some earrings I have been making on the side as I worked on other bigger works and tasks.

I have two groups of earrings: those that lean a little towards Steampunk; and those that have been found or discovered as part of the process of cutting up the recycled metal.

The ones that are Steampunkish have a bit of attitude in that the wearer is going to stand out a bit because of the length and/or uniqueness of the bits and pieces they are made from.

The found earrings are often simple classic light and beautiful pieces.

Some of these earrings will make their way into my online shop (which I have neglected a bit lately); and others will go into a local gallery shop as the owner asked would I give his gallery the opportunity to sell my work as he is keen to have local artists in his gallery shop
