Installation for peace

Peace dove with Graham's orchids as a background.

Over the years Fiona and I have done installations of 21 peace weather grams and doves in a tree at the top of our block at 601 - the tree became known to us as the peace tree.

Last year we also did 7 at the cottage in Scotland as we were away for the 21 September (International Peace Day).

This year we have left 601 and now live in 119; but we don't have a tree out the front.

So we negotiated with Fiona's dad Graham to use his tree.

It is smaller than the one at 601 so we installed 7 doves and seven weather grams as the sun was going down yesterday afternoon.

What about the other 14 doves for this year - 7 are stored in Scotland; and 7 are on Ken's chair sculpture outside our front door.

Just our quirky way of honouring peace; and hoping we can manifest a bit of it in the world around us.

Book earrings and peace book pendants

2019 Barry Smith - Small (about 1.8cm X 1.2cm) silver-plated book earrings - solid silver hooks
During the week and today I have grabbed time to make more book earrings for the shop at Compassion Artists' Book Exhibition. A few photos of the work in progress follow.

2019 Barry Smith - A vintage bookmaker vice assists in the riveting process
2019 Barry Smith - Each pair of earrings has a compassion related word stamped on a page of both earrings
2019 Barry Smith - Nine pairs of earrings - riveted and ready for grinding and polishing - each pair is kept separated as are the left and right earring
I managed to complete 9 pairs of the earrings that are now boxed and tagged ready for delivery to the Nambour Old Ambo Gallery tomorrow afternoon.

Pendant pieces for peace

©2015 Barry Smith - Maybe if we look really hard the chain spells out the word peace!!!!!
Fiona and I are holding an open studio this afternoon (Friday 5-7pm) and tomorrow (Saturday 5 Dec 10am-4pm). I have made a number of inspirational Daily Word and Daily Leaf Word sets. I thought I would add to the inspirational and peace theme by making a few more PeaceBook Pendants as I only had a couple left in my studio-gallery shop.

The PeaceBook Pendants are a bit fiddly to make so I usually make a number at the same time - in this instance 5. Peace Book Pendants have four leaves and are hinged by two jump rings. All five are made from recycled vintage silver-plated EPNS and copper trays and silver plated brass chains.

Hopefully the folk who wear these pendants will not only think and feel peace; but also share a bit in the world.

Art this Friday has been about setting the studio-gallery up for visitors - off now to welcome those who brave the blustery and showery weather - and share some food an wine with them.

Making stock

©2015 Barry Smith - Finger protectors take a beating in the grinding and polishing process
One of the reoccurring discussions in our house is about the amount of creative work given to trying new ideas and designs; and the amount given over to making stock for our shop and galleries - all part of the art life if one wants to not only make but also sell work.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been making stock: new work but along an old theme (Artisan Lamps) for the December show-sale in the st+baker+studio gallery Redcliffe; Daily Word Leaves sets because I had run out of them; Peace Book Pendants - almost out of them; and more Steampunk influenced for show and sale in st+baker+studio gallery.

The making of small word leaves..

Though the work can be production it is still delightful to give the discarded metal and objects new life and new homes.

Carrying peace ….

©2014 Barry Smith - Peace Book pendants
As you can see from the photo above I have just completed a series of Peace Book pendants. Why Peace Books? Each pendant is unique: each has 4 leaves (eight pages); each leaf is made from different recycled metal - silver-plated copper or EPNS; some leaves are the ornate decorative edges of serving trays; each pendant has one page stamped with with the words "seek peace" or "imagine peace"; the leaves are held together by two jump rings which enable the leaves to be turned; and the pendants are on silver-plated chains that are 600mm in length. The tiny Peace Book pendant on the left centre in the photo above is about 30mm long and 14mm wide.

The concept behind the Peace Book pendants is that the owner-wearer carries a bit of peace with them -  as a positive affirmation and goal; bringing a little peace and stillness. In our world it doesn't hurt to carry a reminder of peace.

Closer photos of each of the Peace Book pendants in this series are below.

When I make these pendants I imagine that they can take a little peace into the world.

More Peace Book Pendants

The stash of Peace Book Pendants sold out in Fiona's and my Paths to Peace and Stillness exhibition. Maya, Rosebed Street Gallery Eudlo owner-manager, asked if I could make some more given they were popular.

As you can see from the photos above I managed to make five more Peace Book Pendants and one Peace Pendant. I delivered them to Maya at Rosebed when Fiona and I went over to take part in the Eudlo street festival on Saturday. All the pendants are made from recycled silver-plated metal.
