Unopened books and earrings

©2020 Barry Smith - Ten small riveted but unopened silver-plated books
I have made quite good progress on making a stash (10) small metal books with inspirational words - they are about 4.5cm high and 3.5cm wide. As you can see from the photo above I have got them to the riveted stage. A few progress photos follow.

During the week I will need to grind all the edges; open the books; give any sharp edges a second grind; and then a final polish - it is not done until it is all done.

I did also manage to complete four more pairs of the earrings I was making out of silver-plated disks.

All the earrings are now in the Deckled Edge Press gallery shop. But if folk who don't live locally or visit want to buy any of them they can message me and we can work out arrangements. I just don't have the time to put them in my online shop.

Change and anticipation

©2020 Barry Smith - Limited edition of Be the change mini-poster
I have just finished the above limited edition (10 prints) of A5 posters - known in Deckled Edge Press as mini-posters. The design for this poster came about by serendipitously combining two works - a postcard on "if not now then when?' and a mini poster that just said "be the change".  The photo below shows 1/10.

I have printed my cards for International Peace Day on 21 September. I needed to get them done now so they can be sent out in a couple of weeks time. Post delivery to some places is taking 8 weeks in these pandemic times.

In all I have printed 160 cards - the number was determined by the amount of business card sized paper I had to hand. Just because I could I added a bit of gold dust - peace is special!!!

When I was brushing the gold dusting powder off the cards this interesting insect like image appeared.

Over the weekend I hope to start some small metal books.

Morning moons and turkeys in the trees

©2020 Barry Smith - Moon still very high in the sky as I started my walk this morning
There are those who are not enamoured of the moon so this is an up front warning that there are quite a few moon photos in this blog post.

But there are some who enjoy the daily changes and beauty of the moon - these are for us.

The following photos are different aspects of the moon setting on the 4, 5 and 6 July - the photos are in date order.

I walked Treehaven Way this morning - there was about 6 turkeys running ahead of me on the road. As I got closer a few took to the trees - a bit unusual but it made for a few reasonable photos.

Creative relaxation

©2020 Barry Smith - Cupped circles within a square frames
I did quite a lot of letterpress printing over the weekend - but that is for another blog. By way of a change I spent the morning on Saturday making some earrings based on circles - some folk prefer things in the round.

This was opportunity to use smaller flat pieces of silver-plated copper and brass. The circles of metal were punched using a disc cutting tool, the anvil and a very heavy copper hammer.

I cut, ground and polished enough pieces to make 8 pairs of earrings.

I only got time to assemble 4 pairs - the pair at the start and the three below.

A gentle and relaxing process.

Metal

©2020 Barry Smith - Patinated copper leaves on display
I have finished the stash of patinated copper leaves; and they have now found their way into the DEP gallery-shop as you can see from the photo above.

A few more photos of the leaves with their polished edges follow.

I love how the red light of the roller door mechanism in the garage-studio reflected off the silver-plate bowls in progress early this morning.

Blossoms, birds and droplets

©2020 Barry Smith - Rich healing yellow of wattle
I was going to open the post with the following photo; but it seemed to be too malevolent - an evil crocodile eye??? So I thought the gorgeous sunshine colour of the wattle might be more uplifting.

Birds featured in our lives quite a bit today. We often wake to the chorus of a gang of kookaburras such as the two on the wire in Treehaven way. Over the last few days a flock of yellow tailed black cockatoos have been cruising the neighbourhood with very noisy calls - not sure what that means.

There was a soft dew overnight resulting in blossoms looking refreshed.
