Something old and something new for a wedding

I got my sculptural mountain-wing wood forms sanded and oiled on Saturday. I now need to let them just absorb the oil fully before I start to add the metal wraps.

So I moved on to a commission to create a wedding cake knife and server from a ornate silver-plated EPNS tray and twisted heavy gauge copper wire. As is often the case with me I decided to make two sets just to ensure that there was a high quality one to deliver. I decided to differentiate between the two sets by adding brass handles to the second one.

Anyway the process started with marking up and cutting up a 30cm 'round' silver-plated tray - this way I can get the most out of a tray. Of course there are a few off cuts that well become leaf forms and other things.

I twisted, hammered, bent and drilled the cut pieces and heavy gauge wire; and they were ready for grinding and polishing.

And then all the bits were brought together through the riveting process. I think both sets have turned out well - so options exist for the client. The knives are about 30cm long including the handle; and the servers are between 23cm and 25cm long.

Hopefully a set will be packed and posted early next week. Then I will get back on to the small sculptures.

Ceremonial Knives with a Steampunk influence

I was asked to make some ceremonial knives for the Steampunk Christmas exhibition-sale in Redcliffe. With a bit of a rush I managed to do a new design and create 3 Ceremonial Knives - ceremony in terms of cutting wedding or birthday cakes etc.

The basic knife forms were made using new copper and brass sheet, recycled wood and silver-plated offcuts from trays - all cut, glued and riveted together. The knives are about 25cm long, 2.5cm wide and 1.5cm thick.

Watch parts were selected and cut and polished to fit the basic knife forms.

The knives were then ground using a belt sander and belt finger sander. They were then polished on the jewellery grinding-polishing wheel. After a coat of oil on the timber they were ready to go.

The knives were delivered yesterday.

Today (Friday) was about: attending Kim S's book launch; starting some small pieces for Maleny Additions; and getting ready for a Christmas celebration with art friends - which means making an art present!!!!

Home-wares and art-wares …..

I think it is good to pause sometimes and celebrate achievements - so that is what this blog post is about.

Over the last little I have had some good news from a few of the outlets selling my wares. Maleny Additions has sold a number of my ladles, leaf-spoons and the commissioned cake lifter and knife. Fiona refers to these as my homewards line …..

Anne from Rosetta Books has sold a couple of pieces of my Steampunk influenced jewellery.

And Gary Myers Gallery has sold quite a number of my bowls - including 3 Starburst bowls.

It is good place to be - selling a range of stuff that is. I need to get back down into the garage-studio and start creating more bowls of various kinds as my gallery shop is just about bare - and that is a good way to be.

A slightly different request

It is funny how one thing can lead to another.

I started selling my ladles through Maleny Additions (MA); and then added in Leafspoons. Some time ago I posted on the request I got through MA to make a cake lifter. The couple wanted it for their wedding. They were satisfied with the result; and then said would it be possible for me to make a matching cake knife. Well given I use recycle material I could not use the same metal (silver plate over copper from a heavy ornate tray - once it is gone it is gone); but fortunately I had another silver plated copper tray in my stash with a similar pattern.

So I have made two options; a more traditional wedding cake knife shape; and a dagger form - bit more game of thrones or whatever. The more traditional form is 30cm long; and the dagger form is 25cm long.

I have formed a bend into the blades to stiffen the blades. And as you can see one handle has 4 strands of wire (2X2) and the other six (2X3). I think they have worked out well. They were delivered to MA today so that they can contact the couple to see if this is what they want. And yes they do cut - I was able to cut a slice of baguette bread with each knife.

Its Friday - so must be off to have a glass of red.
