Exciting

I was excited to be informed my artists' book on patriarchy had been accepted as one of the finalists in the Australia artists book award Libris. It is great to be accepted as a finalist in this highly prestigious national award; but I was also excited by the fact that this acceptance might give the book and its content the opportunity to be considered by a wider audience. The opening image shows the cover of the book with the title embossed on the cover - black on black.

The book (It won't dismantle itself) brings together two protest art forms (posters and public graffiti) to make a statement about the some of the repugnant features of patriarchy including the fact that it breeds bullies, it uses its power to maintain its control - including abuse and violence - note the graffiti blood splatter on the second image below. The book states that patriarchy has passed its use-by date - it needs to be dismantled but those who benefit from it have too much to lose so it won't dismantle itself - we need to take affirmative action to dismantle it. The book is A3 in size.

Following are a few images of the book.

As you can see from the two open pages above the interleaves of the book are embossed with the images that are graffitied over the letterpress posters.

I cannot stitch - so I asked Fiona to stitch this book - hence the form of the book is in part a collaboration. If you look at the spine you can see Fiona's excellent stitching with black waxed thread. I had reinforced all of the leaves of the book with black paper to support the single page binding Fiona was to do - from a design perspective this has resulted in a gorgeous spine.

The 9 graffiti stencils were hand cut as was the stencil for embossing the front cover.

Pocket posters and playing with ampersands

One outcome from cutting up the roll of paper was 200 plus business card sized pieces of 270gsm paper. Yesterday I decided to create some 'nano' or 'pocket posters' - aka business card sized 'posters' in portrait format.

Of course when you have a gorgeous purple ink and vintage wood ampersand locked up in the chase one is tempted to play with a few left over cards once I had printed the 200 i aimed for - see photo above.

Striking purple ink mixed ready for action - some dry lumps in the ink I needed to work around

On the press.

This is what 200 ampersand printed cards looks like.

Today I decided to turn 100 of the ampersand cards into pocket posters - "you can & you will". I quite like the green I mixed. Looks delightful on the press and on the prints.

And this is what 100 'pocket posters' looks like.

Because I still had ink on the press I chose to put a different wood ampersand into the chase and print some mono coloured pocket posters on black card offcuts - I like the striking contrast of the green against the black. I printed twenty of the green on black 'pocket posters'.

I will find a purpose for the other 100 ampersand cards in the future.

Mini-posters for daily inspiration

I'm printing some posters in preparation for a poster related exhibition that Fiona and I will have at Deckled Edge Press towards the end of the year.

This mini-poster incorporates the words I use in my Daily Leaf Words sets. I mixed the three colours above as I want to offer folk a bit of choice but also I wanted to create a calming blue and green.

I have used 2.5cm tall vintage wood type and set each word on top of each other - making for a continuous column of words and colour. They are printed on 300GSM white cotton paper.

I couldn't resist adding a bit of bling.

The mini-posters are already for sale at DEP for $35each.

Love heals - single sheet book

©2020 Barry Smith - Love heals - a small pocket sized book (10.5cm high and 7.5cm wide) - photos of my artist's proof
I have been working on a single page unbound book using a poem (..love heals..) written by our American artist friend Mary-Jane Dodd. Mary-Jane gave me permission to use this poem from her publication called Offerings.

.. love heals..

upon my last breath
may I know fully
that I have given all
my heart could give.

that the chips
and cracks
incurred along the way

served not to weaken it
but allowed the light
to enter
(and exit)

and made it all
the stronger.

The book has been printed using Deckled Edge Press' 1890 Lightning Jobber press. The book is printed with Times New Roman lead type (14pt); and was printed on single sheets of synthetic vellum and a fine paper (MAP). On the back of the sheets I have printed an image of one of my cracked and repaired bowls to reflect some of the imagery of the poem.

©2020 Barry Smith - A trial image of the bowl on the back of the single sheet - beautiful image but a little too dark and used a lot of ink
©2020 Barry Smith - Various prints of the vessel - more subdued; and a mix of sepia and toned down black and silver-gold; and printed full sheet and half sheet.
From the vellum prints and the MAP paper printed I hope to select two limited editions: 5 vellum books; and 15 MAP paper books.

Experimenting with metallic dust

©2020 Barry Smith - Wood type, teal colour and gold dusting powder - excess gold dust powder is to be brushed off when the ink is totally dry
I asked Fiona to make up a batch of teal coloured ink as I wanted to print a few postcards on grey paper (Colorplan Smoke 270gsm). I thought the teal would contrast well with the smoke grey.

We have some metallic dusting powder (gold and copper) in our ink draw; so I thought I'd experiment with adding a bit of that to the teal lettering to give the postcards an extra design element and highlight.

I decided to use 2.5cm wood type - we have three slightly different versions of this size wood type - photo of one version of the wood type we have.

Dusting needs to be done on each print as soon as it comes off the press.

©2020 Barry Smith - Adding a bit of copper dust to hope print
I had intended to print two words - hope and peace; but in the end I enjoyed myself so much and I think improved my technique so I went on to do four postcards - adding in joy and love.

©2020 Barry Smith - Proofs - I love the teal colour on black as well!!!

©2020 Barry Smith - Hope dusted with copper but brushed upwards
©2020 Barry Smith - Peace with gold - dusted upwards - excess to be brushed off

I enjoyed this experimentation - particularly like the combination of the teal colour and the dusting powder.

Some production can be playful

©2020 Barry Smith - Fiona hard at work - racks of printed goodies
Fiona and I spent Saturday and Sunday morning working in Deckled Edge Press studio-workshop-gallery. We are continuing to make product for sale; and test the set up of the space, systems and equipment before we open in a few weeks. Of course the opening will have to be done in accord with the Covid-19 requirements including numbers.

One of the fun pieces was the card below - it could be a birthday card; but could also just be an everyday card for folk who love riding bikes. We loved the joyful play on words.

I finished a few more book marks.

Gorgeous purple

©2020 Barry Smith - Gorgeous purple - a trio of hearts
Fiona had been doing some experimenting with rolling three colours on to wood type. Rather than waste the ink I decided I would do a couple more print runs of gift cards using more of those ornaments.

The purple I created by mixing the dark purple into leftover white created a gorgeous purple where the white was fairly popping out of it.

I did a press run in purple; and then managed to print some in red today.

I did not quite get time to finish the series - only a couple more; and then the tray of ornaments can be put back into the cabinet ready for use by us or students who may come to try their hand in the Deckled Edge Press studio.
