Giving

©2018 Barry Smith - Fungi Bowls and hammers - earlier in the day I had given 6 of my hammers a polish to ensure the hammering surfaces were in good condition.
One of the things I enjoy about being a creative is being able to make stuff and give it away. Making and giving to bring a little more light and joy into what at times can seem to be a sad and dark world.

Over the weekend I managed to use some of those metal pieces cut during the week and on Friday and use them to make: a pair of Name Leaves; and a trio of Fungi Bowls.

Because I was making leaves I made 10 Peace Leaves whilst making the two Name Leaves.

©2018 Barry Smith - Peace Leaves and Name Leaves on the workbench - the workbench has seen a lot of metal in a lot of forms - I love it's patina (aka marks, scratches and stains)
©2018 Barry Smith - The two Name Leaves - same name - informal and formal versions - leaf forms are about 14-15cm long
The Fungi Bowls seem so small and delicate when compared to the hammers responsible for their creation. But the outcome looks good.

The Name Leaves, the Fungi Bowls and 4 of the Peace Leaves went to new homes today.

Name and Peace Leaves

©2018 Barry Smith - Peace on a leaf
Today has been quite all over the place - a few community engagements including attending the end of year volunteer get together for our local neighbourhood centre. My tree of life pieces will be given out as token recognition of the grand work of our volunteers.

But I did get time to finish 5 Name Leaves - these are leaves for children in recognition of their birth and naming.

I also finished thirty Peace Leaves for giving away to encourage peace.

What about my new tool for bending metal; and I think I might need a new pair of leather gloves?

I'm now off to the neighbourhood centre event. There will be pizza and red wine when I get back home and settle in for Friday evening.

Grind and polish

©2018 Barry Smith - Silver-plated copper - small leaf - about 7-8cm long and 2 cm wide - picking up late afternoon colour on the polishing bench
I spent about 4-5 hours today finishing about 50 silver-plated inspirational leaves I started maybe up to a couple of weeks ago.  I had only reached the folding and cutting stage. Yesterday I managed to hammer all the leaves; and today was about grinding and polishing. The leaves are made from salvaged silver-plated brass and copper trays.

There is a bit of wear and tear in the grinding-polishing process

I also added in a Name Leaf for a new born - marking her naming and wishing her growth and strength for the future.

Metal messages

©2018 Barry Smith - Silver-plated offcuts fragments
Not a lot of time over the weekend to enjoy myself in the garage-studio. I did make a good start on making 50 silver-plated leaves with inspirational words stamped on them. Thirty five will become sets of words for Daily Leaf Words; and the rest will become inspirational leaves for giving away.

I'm quite methodical when I'm making batches of the inspirational word leaves. The photo below shows the 35 pieces of metal (about 8-9cm long and 2cm wide) marked ready for stamping.

My copper hammer gets a bit of a worker when doing batches of words.

The stamped pieces are then folded for marking up as leaf forms.

And the folded and cut forms are now ready for hammering, opening and grinding and polishing.

Production number 1

I have called this post Production number 1 as I intend to do two posts on the heap of product that I was asked to do this week. On our return from Scotland Maleny Additions told me I better get my skates on as they had all but run out of stock. So I needed to make: ladles, Leaf Tea Caddy Spoons, Leafspoons and Leaf Pate Knives.

This post is about ladles and pate knives and a few peace leaves for good measure.

First a few images of ladles in the making and ready for market.

Pate knives never look good to start with but in the end they shine up well.

I always like to have a bit of a stash of peace lives on hand to give away.

One of the things I learnt in doing all the leaf form things together is just how different the sequencing is for each design.  I'm thinking of doing a blurb type book on the different processes; and I will add a few observations into the next post.

More metal with a message

©2017 Barry Smith - Curled over stems of peace leaf bookmarks
Today was given over to work on the block - getting jobs done while the weather was fine - including oiling 5 decks. My art post today is about peace leaf bookmarks I have been working on during the week.

Last Thursday I was asked by our local Maleny Neighbourhood Centre if I could make 100 small simple peace leaves. These leaves are to be given away by the Centre volunteers at our local Christmas Festival (tonight - and it is raining) to say thanks to members of our community for support during the past year. The Centre also asked that the leaves be stamped with a peace symbol - peace at Christmas.

The photo below shows over 100 cut and stamped leaves in the rough - cut from various bits of recycled brass and copper - before grinding and polishing.

I turned the stems of the leaf forms so that they can be used as book marks or a pendant. So this is what a box of 109 peace leaf bookmarks looked like - delivered yesterday (Thursday)

Picking up the threads

It is a period we all go through - having a lot of commitments; creating havoc in our studio space; and needing to clean up to enable us to start again.

Well that happened to me over the weekend; and after cleaning the surfaces I discovered a number of projects I needed to finish including: Peace Doves (sort of doves!!!) for our peace tree; Peace Leaves for Fiona's dad to take to his meditation group; big copper leaves for the next in the Bending series; and bowls and leaves for a few sets of Daily Leaf Words.

The priority was the Peace Doves - I needed to make 10 new doves to add to the five that were still in in the tree from last year and the ones that had fallen out of the tree to make up 21 for International Peace Day.

I got them done and as Fiona was hanging her Peace Weathergrams I hung the Peace Birds.

I managed to finish the 10 Peace Leaves for Fiona's dad to hand out before International Peace Day.

And I roughly cut out the silver-plated blanks for the Daily Leaf Words sets.

So all in all I feel I have reclaimed my garage-studio and am doing things I want to do - get feeling.

I ended this post with a lovely bit of patina just because it is beautiful.
