Flipping between timber and metal

I have had a few tasks on the go: carving vases (above and below); making leaf related spoons; and starting a stack of copper leaves.

The first few of the leaf related spoons cut and ground and ready for the hammer.

About 40 copper blanks cut ready to make leaves of various sizes including 19cm long ones for a set for a Bending sculpture.

Sometimes it is good to be able to more from task to task when making multiples - gives the eyes and muscles a rest!!!

Trio of vases

Yesterday I set myself the goal of carving three vases from salvaged timber. One of the possible downsides of using the salvaged timber is you need to be willing to accept the cracks and old inactive wood borer holes. Still as you can see from the photo above the end result can be beautiful.

Following are some process photos including cutting a log into pieces and enjoying the bark that was removed.

Ending with another photo of there trio of carved timber vases.

Two beauties

I got time to whittle away at some timber to carve a couple of timber vases as you can see from the photo above. The smaller tall one on the left is carved from a piece of the fallen liquid amber tree branch; and the one on the right from a scrap of rough cut camphor laurel.

Some process photos follow. In one you can see that I used the draw blade to shave the rough cut area off the camphor laurel. I was going to leave the bark on the liquid amber but found it had lifted in the drying process is ib the end it had to be removed.

I must say - carving these forms can be quite relaxing. The only drawback I have had to date has been that fine wood dust has the tendency to get in my eyes even when wearing protective glasses.
