A positive weekend - open studio and completion of a project

It is hard to believe that our DEP open stdio event has been and gone. Saturday was a great day - the weather stayed fine and we had a good crowd of people through the studio. Strangely we have no photos of the people in the studio simply because we were so busy: talking to people; sharing the space (up to 15 folk at a time); giving people a chance to try their hand at letterpress printing; and selling some bits and pieces.

Below are a couple of photos of some stuff on the walls.

A few photos related to opportunity for people to try letterpress.

Today was a misty rainy day so I got time to finish a project. Fiona suggested we might print some birthday cards that included a calendar. I had set up the chase before the open studio - today I printed cards for June 2020 through to December 2020. The idea is a person purchases the relevant month and then circles the date relevant to the friend or family member - similar to what I have done for September 21.

The project was quite structured but also labour intensive as I had to change the heading on each and move all the numbers around for each month. I was using an old calendar set and a few of the spacers were missing so Fiona suggested I use some leaf ornaments of the same size - it worked well.

We are officially both tired but also happy with our weekend achievements.

Just in time

©2020 Barry Smith - Riveted silver-plated earrings
A few more pairs of silver-plated earrings for the DEP gallery-shop - just in time for the Open Studio Event (10am-4pm Saturday 13 June).

The grinding and polishing was done in the mist as you can see from the photos below.

Still finishing nine pairs of earrings adds to the stash for the gallery-shop and gives folk a choice.

We will see how it all goes tomorrow.

Wet and misty

©2020 Barry Smith - Almost the last of the peace roses on the block with droplets

There was no walk this morning - there were rain showers most of the night and they continued this morning.

Though as always the rain and the mist allow for droplets and the sighs of the plants. Warning - droplets on lichen photos follow.

On Monday morning the valley was full of cloud puddles.

Moon, letterpress and bananas

©2020 Barry Smith - Our camera was having difficulty focusing on an early morning moon this morning - but I think the blurred moon against a navy sky looks quite interesting
A few photos of the moon over the last week.

We have been working quite hard to get the DEP studio-workshop and gallery shop ready for the open studio event on Saturday 13 June.

And of course there are always things to do on the block - like topping up gravel in a few places and building a new entrance to the top of the shed. But there are rewards as well such as the big bunch of bananas below. Ripening will start in about a week.

Finding beauty

©2020 Barry Smith - Earrings made from offcuts of silver-plated serving dishes
From time to time I'm asked am I a jeweller - the answer of course is no. How is it that I make some jewellery - mainly earrings and pendants? The short answer is that I started to do this work because I did not want to waste beautiful pieces of metal or adornments that I collected as part of my salvaging of metal - aka - cutting up silver-plated trays etc.

In exchange for silver-plated serving dishes I committed to making the gifting person a couple of pairs of earrings.

I managed to complete five pairs of earrings to give the gifted a choice.

I also managed to finish off some pendants for the gallery-shop in the new DEP studio-workshop.

My jewellery pieces are called found and formed in recognition of the recycled and salvaged nature of the materials.

Winter light and other fragments

©2020 Barry Smith - Layers of winter dawn colour across the valley
We started a little later this morning - this meant there was a little more light. This beautiful colour appeared in the valley as I started my pre-walk exercises. The exercises were further interrupted by the appearance of sunlight being reflected off some of the buildings in the Brisbane CBD.

We have been having some cold and windy weather - my usual walking path is blocked; and a flag outside one of the Treehaven Way houses was shredded.
